Prof Ian Town

Ian is the Chief Science Advisor at the Ministry of Health, an appointment he has held since July 2019. Prior to that he was the Chair of the Health Precinct Advisory Council in Christchurch and was Chair of several groups within the Canterbury Clinical Network.
His specialty training was in Respiratory Medicine and he has published widely in the discipline with a focus on asthma, COPD and pneumonia. He has been a strong advocate for Tobacco Control and supported Ministry colleagues as they drafted the Vaping Legislation recently passed by the government.
Ian has had a long association with the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation serving as both Medical Director then later as Board Member and President.
Ian has been a key player in providing science advice to the government on the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
